CHILD SAFETY WITH WINDOW TREATMENTS

Ensuring cord safety for window coverings is one of our highest priorities. At More Than Blinds, we are committed to offering the safest options for your family without compromising on style or functionality.

As a proud participant in child and pet safety initiatives, More Than Blinds collaborates with the Window Covering Safety Council, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the Window Covering Manufacturers Association. Together, we uphold the strictest industry standards for window treatments.

Since cords and children don’t mix, we’ve compiled essential child safety tips for your reference.

SAFELY USING WINDOW CORDS

Many of our window coverings include lift systems with anchored, tensioned cord loops. While not cordless, these systems eliminate free-hanging cords. Proper anchoring and tensioning are vital for safety. If a cord tensioner detaches or a cord comes loose, reattach it immediately or contact our Customer Care team for help.

For older window coverings with free-hanging cords, we recommend the following safety practices:

Install Cord Cleats
For free-hanging cords or Cordlock Shades, use cord cleats to secure cords when not in use. Complimentary cord cleats are available upon request.

Avoid Tying Cords
Never knot multiple cords together to form a loop. Always keep cords untangled and free.

Child Safety Retrofit Kits
Prevent accidents with a FREE retrofit kit from the Window Covering Safety Council. Each kit includes a safety brochure with detailed instructions.

CHILD SAFETY CHECKLIST

To maximize safety, follow these tips:

  • Replace any window coverings made before 2001 with modern, safer alternatives.

  • Use only cordless window coverings in young children’s rooms and sleeping areas.

  • Move cribs, beds, furniture, and toys away from windows and cords, preferably to another wall.

  • Keep all pull cords, lift cords, and back cords out of children’s reach.

Always Ensure:

  • Tasseled pull cords remain out of reach, regardless of the window treatment’s position.

  • Horizontal blinds and shades are locked into place when lowered, including on a windowsill.

  • Cord stops are properly installed and adjusted to limit inner lift cord movement.

SAFETY WARNINGS

The window covering industry provides warning labels, tags, and other materials to highlight the risks associated with corded window coverings. These labels caution against potential strangulation hazards and recommend cordless or inaccessible cord options.

At More Than Blinds, we are dedicated to raising awareness about these risks and helping you choose the safest window treatments for your home. Ask your design consultant for more information about our product safety features and recommendations.
